This colloquium explores alternatives to nationalism as a form of socio-political organization, with a particular focus on how such alternatives have been articulated in the Middle East. We will discuss how both historians and political scientists have studied imperialism, communism, pan-Islamism, and other anti-nationalist ideas in the region. Final projects may examine nationalism and its alternatives in any part of the world. This course is designed to serve as the junior colloquium for the History-Political Science major, but we welcome all students with an interest in the course theme and/or political scientific and historical disciplinary practices.
